“He should give me my money back,” said Armstrong.

The man Armstrong hired is Matthew Beal, who owns Post2Coast Vinyl Fencing.

While declining to be interviewed on camera, Beal agreed to speak to Global Okanagan over the phone.

“I don’t feel like I did anything wrong,” he told us.

Beal said he would not return the $ 2,000 because he had already spent it on materials for Armstrong’s fence. He also said he would like Armstrong to prove she can pay the full amount first before he starts the job.

“I won’t start the job until she’s fully paid,” said Beal. “I’m not ready to do this until you can show me you have $ 4,000 until you can pay me at the end of the job.”

Since he is not refunding the cash deposit, Global News asked Beal why he shouldn’t give Armstrong the material he bought.

He replied, “Why is a reporter calling like she (Catherine) has my number.”

According to their Facebook page, the address for Post2Coast Vinyl Fencing is 3500 Carrington Road in West Kelowna, but when Global Okanagan visited the site there was no such store in that location.

Beal admitted on the phone that this isn’t the actual address for his business, but said there was a good reason for it.

“I run my business from home,” he said.

When asked why he would put the wrong address on the Facebook page, Beal replied, “So people don’t know where I live.”

As Armstrong ponders her next step to get their money back, she advises others to learn from their mistake.

“Never trust anyone,” she said.

When she needed repairs to her 14 year old deck, Anne Garmatter hired a local contractor. Two months later, her deck is in ruins and she has lost $ 2,000.

PERRYSBURG, Ohio – As our nights keep getting cooler, you might think of sitting outside and enjoying a campfire with the family.

It’s something a Perrysburg woman would love to do, but there is one problem: her deck is in ruins and she blames a local contractor.

Anne Garmatter said her family loves her deck and uses it year round. Not only is it a great place to relax, but there is also some nostalgia built into the boards.

“The deck is 14 years old,” she said. “My husband built it. My husband has now passed away.”

Garmatter said her husband built the deck with his bare hands. But some repairs are needed now and she has turned to local contractor John Silva for help.

“I called him and he came out and gave me a quote,” said Garmatter. “We talked about everything I wanted.”

“‘No problem, no problem'”, Garmatter recalled when Silva told her. “‘It’ll take a few days. I’ll get it done. Bring everyone in here and we’ll get it done, ripped out and gone.'”

The offer was just under $ 5,000, which was a bit steeper than expected, but she agreed to the work anyway. She initially filed $ 2,000.

But Garmatter said after Silva gave her the detour for weeks, what she got for it was a disheveled mess.

“So here I am with this half-finished, sloppy one,” she said. “He would lie to me about anything. He used a teal sharpie marker on the board and then he used this board.”

“He won’t answer my calls,” said Garmatter.

However, Silva answered a call from WTOL on Tuesday evening. He told us he would refund Garmatters $ 2,000 if she returned the supplies she agreed to.

Ever since Silva promised to give WTOL a written statement, he has ignored our calls and messages.

“I’m already looking for other contractors to come over here and rip out his mess, which will cost me even more,” Garmatter said. “But right now I’m so far that I just don’t care. I just want to do it right.”

Garmatter said she just wants her money back and has no interest in Silva returning to complete the work on this point.

WTOL will continue to contact Silva to resolve this dispute.
