In all U.S. regions, 27% of new single-family homes in 2019 had stucco as the main facing material, according to the Census Bureau Survey of Construction (SOC). Vinyl siding followed with 25% and fiber cement siding such as HardiePlank or HardieBoard took third place with 21%. A very small proportion of the single-family houses started last year consisted of wood or wood products (5%) or stone, stone or other stone materials (1%).

The Census Bureau’s SOC data is available for the nine census divisions, and there are significant differences in the use of siding between divisions. Vinyl siding was the most common primary exterior material used in 4 out of 9 census departments. In the Mid Atlantic and New England, vinyl siding was used in 75 percent and 68 percent of new homes started in 2019, respectively. In the East and West North Central Divisions, vinyl siding accounted for 62 and 44 percent, respectively.

Stucco was most commonly used as the primary exterior wall material in 2019 in the Pacific, Mountain, and South Atlantic businesses: 57 percent, 52 percent and 38 percent, respectively, of new single-family homes started in the areas they occupied. Brick or brick veneer was the first choice in the East- and West-South-Central divisions. In the West South Central region, 62 percent of new single-family homes introduced in 2019 used brick or brick veneer as the primary exterior material, compared with 44 percent in the East South Central division.
