Claggett said as a deposit. This deposit was $ 15,483.
Work was due to begin at her Raleigh home in July.
Instead, Claggett says she got a couple of emails with Robco, then nothing.
“It’s just amazing that they went completely dark,” said Claggett.
In frustration, she hit 5 On Your Side last week.
Monica Laliberte heard from other customers in Raleigh, Durham, and Smithfield.
Everyone says they paid Robco 50% deposit for work that never started.
To get responses, 5 On Your Side CEO Jay Robinson and his brother, Senior Project Manager Andrew Robinson, called several times, emailed and texted them.
We also reached out to three other company representatives but never heard from them.
When Monica went to Robco’s last week, she found locked gates and parked trucks.
Monica also went to a Raleigh townhouse that has online records listed as Jay Robinson’s home.
No answer there or in a house a few doors down where a Robco truck was parked.
Shortly after 5 On Your Side got in touch, customers finally heard from Robco.
Some got texts, others, like Alyssa Duke of Durham, got an email.
Sometimes it was said, “… for economic reasons we will be forced to close our doors and cease operations.”
Robco wrote that the company “will not have the crews or support needed to … start or complete jobs,” adding that it will review contracts … and send another update.
Duke was later told that a check was in the mail.
Three customers received refund checks over the weekend.
Katy Claggett was still waiting.
“We’re just trying to imagine a worst-case scenario,” said Claggett. “I think that would be $ 15,000 without anything to show. And that’s so unacceptable to us.”
Then, late Monday after 5 On Your Side contacted the company again, Claggett received a message from Andrew Robinson that they were “… working on refunds …” and “… have an update this week become”.
Limit the deposit to limit the risk
While most of the customers did their research to verify the company, deposit amounts are a benefit for viewers. Monica’s rule of thumb for any contractor is no more than 10% lower. Then make the payments when the work is done.
