Around 6,200 National Guard troops from Washington, DC and six states have been mobilized to help police keep the capital safe. All military personnel will reach the capital by the weekend, he said.
“These personnel and security measures will be in place for no less than 30 days,” said McCarthy.

He made the remarks at a press conference with Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser. He said city officials didn’t ask the Pentagon for military assistance until Wednesday afternoon after the mob broke the police security chain around the Capitol.

“When they called us at the Pentagon, we became aware of the Capitol breach yesterday afternoon,” McCarthy said, adding that he “has been working quickly to advance our resources.”

Under federal law, McCarthy controls the National Guard in Washington, DC – as opposed to state guard units, which are under the control of the governors unless they are mobilized for federal missions.

McCarthy said 850 guards were at the Capitol on Thursday.
