SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO) – At least two neighboring states have fences around their governor’s mansions, and South Dakota is one of the last to have one installed, according to a state official.
While Maggie Seidel of Governor Kristi Noem’s office said the office doesn’t talk about security, she “can confirm that we are one of the last (if not the last) residences in the country without a meaningful fence.”
South Dakota state officials said this week that a 2019 plan to add a security fence at the residence would be used.
A security fence is being erected around the SD governor’s residence
The North Dakota governor’s residence has a security fence and surveillance cameras, said Sgt. Wade Kadrmas, the North Dakota Highway Patrol’s security and education officer. Kadrmas said he was unable to provide additional information on security measures.
The governor’s residence in St. Paul has had a security fence for many years, said Bruce Gordon, communications director for the Minnesota Department of Public Security. Gordon said he couldn’t provide any additional information about security measures.
It’s not the only state that decided this year to build a security fence in recent years.
On July 14, the Lexington Kentucky Herald said the state had plans to build a security fence following an incident involving an effigy and protests.

What has happened in state buildings for the past 19 years is similar to security adjustments in other areas of life such as metal detectors in different locations and increased security in airports, Nash said.
In at least most states, security for the governor and the governor’s residence is provided by the state or the highway patrol.
In Nebraska, State Capitol Security is the newest part of the State Patrol of Nebraska, according to the State Patrol website. One specific detail concerns the safety of the governor, family, and residence of the governor, according to the website.

Tour requirements include: All visitors over the age of 18 must bring government-issued photo identification or passport to gain access to the villa grounds. Guests must go through a magnetometer upon entering the manor on the Ilinois Villa website.
