OTIS, Oregon (KPTV) – Oregonians who lost their homes during the historic forest fires debate rebuilding as lumber prices continue to rise.

Dezarae Lawrence says the cost of rebuilding a 1,500-square-foot home is about $ 20,000 more than last year because of the cost of wood alone. She says it is unclear whether her insurance will cover the difference. In addition, she had to make an agreement with the client about a surcharge of three to eleven percent.

Lawrence says she is frustrated that her mortgage payments could rise if she falls victim to wildfire. She says it’s not just about rebuilding the house, but also about other lost outbuildings and their fence.

“The hike in the price of wood was detrimental to my fence as we do all the work,” said Lawrence. “Just the fence material, except for the metal, so no screws – everything costs $ 8,000, and your insurance company doesn’t think your fence is worth $ 8,000 because it isn’t.”

So far, your insurance company has not paid the total cost of rebuilding the fence.

Last month, FOX 12 spoke to a large timber retailer who told us that the price of some wooden planks had increased by about 500 percent, about $ 13.00 a gallon for gasoline.
