The service provider has a complicated history with the channel, which now accounts for around 25 percent of its business. Now that around $ 2 billion is available to grow as a privately held company, Windstream is looking to get the channel back on track, Layne Levine, president of Windstream Enterprise and its Wholesale division, told CRN.

The Little Rock, Ark., Based provider filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in February 2019, a move that Windstream called a “voluntary restructuring” after it closed its legal dispute with US hedge fund Aurelius Capital Management, a Windstream bondholder , had lost.

Two months later, Windstream began evaluating and reducing contracts with sales partners who had fallen below the annual sales threshold, the solution provider told CRN at the time. The move followed a similar move that Windstream took in 2016 when it announced to its partners that accounts less than $ 1,500 would be cut off by the first day of 2017.

“A few things were done before I showed that in hindsight I probably would not have supported. But when you are restructuring, it’s a difficult time for everyone, ”Levine said, adding that the company had to make difficult decisions. “We had to look at some partners who hadn’t fogged up a mirror for us in years.”

The company had 30 separate partnership deals with legacy companies north of 30 at the time, making management an “impossible” task, Levine said.

But Windstream is again increasing its sales through the channel today, he said. “We are very busy and we have already laid the foundation,” he added.

Windstream introduced a channel integration model this year that allows the carrier’s direct employees to work on deals with channel partners without the two of them competing.

The channel now accounts for about a quarter of Windstream Enterprise’s business, and Levine’s goal is to get that slice to 45 to 50 percent, a “realistic goal” thanks to the company’s new channel integration model, he said.

Windstream said it was released from bankruptcy on Monday. Now the company has the freedom to move into “offensive mode” with its portfolio of solutions and managed services that can be overlaid on top of connectivity services, Levine said.

“Most people think that when you file for bankruptcy, you are not spending any money. During the restructuring in 2019, we spent more on research and development and improving products and systems, ”he said. Windstream is focused on becoming leaders in strategic product areas such as SD-WAN, UCaaS and OfficeSuite.

“We’re going to be very untelco-esque about the things we have to offer from next month,” he said. “We will be the point of contact – that is my goal.”

The majority of Windstream’s business comes from sales in the Windstream Enterprise and Wholesale divisions. Windstream Kinetic is the company’s consumer business, primarily serving rural markets with its fiber and broadband presence.
