Cogwheels: The Deck Builder can now be rolled back on Kickstarter and only has a few days left at the time of writing. It has already reached the funded mark and is being met. If you like it, now is the time to do it.

Following the success of SINS: The Deck-Builder (a deck building game that is just as cheeky as it sounds), Jackinthebox Games have worked hard to create a lighter, airier, and more family-friendly version. This game is called Gears: The Deck Builder, and while we don’t have a physical copy, we verified it via digital sources.

Personally, I love an easy deck building and hand management game, and there can never be enough games like Dale of Merchants or Empires of the North in my collection. Wo Gears: The deck builder delivers his secret sauce through the numerous different tuck boxes in which the game is fulfilled, each with a unique play style.

There are up to seven tuck boxes that you can buy into, with different deposit levels offering different mixtures. Those announced on Kickstarter include:

• Destructive game
• Rejecting game
• Insightful game
• Unfair game
• Recycled game
• Economic game
• Defensive game

Each game begins with the players having access to the same starting cards and having to recruit a crew from the central market from there. The object of the game is to be the first player to score two victory points. You can do this by counterbalancing your opponents’ desperation while managing your own determination.

The seven different tuck boxes each promise the same core gameplay, but with a clear distinction between each one as the game progresses. For example, the destructive game box is about removing (destroying) cards in your hand in order to keep only the most powerful. Insightful Play, on the other hand, allows players to search and manage their deck from round to round, allowing for powerful combinations.

Visually, Gears: The Deck-Builder looks particularly attractive to me, with a distinctive steampunk style that really brings the anthropomorphic characters to life. As I mentioned earlier, we don’t have a physical copy in hand, but after looking at the Jackinthebox Games’ previous Kickstarter (SINS) fulfillment, we have no reason to believe that the quality of the finished components is any less than that will be from you. ‘I would expect these days.
