Kennewick, WA

A sleepy driver narrowly avoided being impaled by a wooden fence post after racing through a fence Monday night.

The driver had spent the day hiking out of state and had been driving a few hours before arriving in Kennewick, police said. He nodded off just after 9 p.m. behind the wheel near the intersection of 10th Avenue and 8th Place

His Volkswagen hit a fire hydrant before pulling through a fence and stopping in a back yard. The wooden fence splintered and at least one of the posts struck through the windshield, missing the man by inches.

Kennewick police said in a Facebook post that the driver was miraculously not injured. They took him to a local hotel where he could get some sleep.

The officials found that drowsy driving is almost as dangerous as drunk driving. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration states that an average of 100,000 accidents are associated with drowsy driving each year. Of these, 71,000 resulted in injuries and 1,550 killed someone.
