“It’s more than crazy. The price of the wood has skyrocketed, ”said Workman.
In some places by at least 50% and in others by twice as much. The current cost of building an average sized deck is much higher.
“In terms of price, they went up another $ 1,200 to $ 2,000,” said Workman.
What a change from a year ago when Channel 2 spoke to contractor Jonathan Farrell. He said the lumber prices were reasonable at the time. The problem was, you couldn’t get one.
“I just told the customers. There’s no wood, ”Farrell said.
The pandemic has been blamed for the shortage. Americans stuck at home took their stimulus checks to the major hardware stores and bought all the boards.
TRENDING STORIES:
COVID-19 closed many of the sawmills, leaving new shipments behind.
Experts say a drop in production is still a problem, but last summer’s forest fires in the Pacific Northwest made things a lot worse.
But Workman did not notice any supply issues. Only price problems.
“Everyone says it’s COVID. It’s not because of COVID. They only use the advantage because there is COVID. They still cut the trees the same way. They still grind the trees the same way, ”Workman said.
Contractor Kenneth Branch is equally frustrated. He gives a customer an offer for a new deck one day, but when he buys the boards the next day the price went up again.
He believes that prices should be balanced by now.
“It stays in the high range, where it’s actually like the stock market,” said Branch.
