Middle school roof, high school cameras also to be repaired

SEQUIM – Helen Haller Elementary has an extra level of security after the Sequim School District began building a fence on the property at 350 W. Fir Street during the district’s spring break.

Increasing security for the school has long been discussed because of its many access points. The new fence creates fewer access points to the main entrance of the school for students, staff and visitors.

Rob Clark, Superintendent of Sequim, said the fence was part of the district’s capital project levy, which was waived prior to his hiring. In 2017, voters approved the three-year $ 5.75 million levy to build the district’s central kitchen and demolish the Sequim Community School.

Clark said there was around $ 170,000 in the tax fund that was used for the fence, roof repairs at Sequim Middle School, and camera repairs at Sequim High School.

Clark said no other money in the fund was available for additional fences in other locations.

It cost about $ 38,000 to install the fence. The Viking Fence Company Inc. from Bremerton commissioned the work with the execution.

“It certainly alleviates some concerns for Haller employees and Haller parents,” said Clark.

A security protocol was enforced earlier this year to prevent parents and visitors from bringing children into their classrooms before school and / or picking them up after school.

When school children and staff can return to Helen Haller and other Sequim schools remains uncertain as concerns about COVID-19 persist nationwide. Schools were originally closed until April 24, but Governor Jay Inslee on Monday ordered the facilities to close for the remainder of the year.

The next members of the Sequim School Board will meet on April 13th.
