But Andreas Flaten said he was shocked by his final payment: 90,000 pennies covered in oil or grease at the end of his driveway earlier this month, news outlets reported. On top of the pile was an envelope with Flaten’s final payroll and an explicit goodbye message.
“It’s a childish thing,” said Flaten.
Flaten said he quit his job at Peachtree City’s A OK Walker Autoworks in November. He said he owed the last check and was having trouble getting it, and even reached out to the Georgia Department of Labor for help.
In mid-March, Flaten said when he was leaving his house with his girlfriend, he noticed the pile at the end of his driveway. He said the pennies were covered in an oily substance.
Now his nightly routine is cleaning the pennies so he can cash them out. He said it took him about an hour and a half to clean several hundred.
“I think this is going to be a lot of work for the money I’ve already worked for,” he said. “It’s definitely not fair at all.”
The store’s owner, Miles Walker, spoke briefly to WGCL-TV and said he didn’t know whether he’d given the pennies to Flaten or not.
“I don’t really remember,” Walker told the TV station. “It does not matter. He got paid. That’s all that counts.”
Walker went on to call Flaten a “weenie”.
Flaten’s friend Olivia Oxley hopes her boyfriend’s story will shed some light on how people are “treated so badly by their employers.”
She said the couple have stopped being angry and are looking at the trifle in a positive light.
“With so many pennies we have to find some treasure. I already found one from 1937, ”said Oxley. “After the first full shovel we could only laugh because it took this poor, wretched man so much time to be vengeful and cruel. We absolutely refused to let us ruin it for a single moment. “
