What do you get when you take Darkest Dungeon and Slay the Spire and mix them up with an epic anime art style? I’m sure you can guess the answer, but I’ll tell you anyway. You get the fantasy roguelike deck builder Gordian Quest, which just launched on Steam Early Access. The game features turn-based combat, strategy, and deck building gameplay.
Ancient curses are attacking the land and it is up to you to rally your party and get on your way to deal with the real menace. You can choose from a spirited cast of characters, each with unique class skills. As you complete quests and collect victories, you will receive equipment to improve your hero’s skills. You can also level up your heroes through Gordian Quest’s unique skill grid system.
Each hero can have multiple styles of play thanks to the different skill schools, talents and items available. However, as you will find out, the heroes have different strengths. So some adjustments work better than others.
As with all rogue games, Gordian Quest aims to provide players with a repeatable experience that doesn’t feel like a chore every time you start over. For this purpose, the maps and dungeons in the game are generated procedurally. So you are never the same as on your previous run. Plus, the items you find in each run require you to make spontaneous build and strategy decisions, much like the items in Slay the Spire.
The heroes and battlefields in Gordian Quest are not static. You need to think strategically about where your heroes stand and move, and what active and passive skills they are using. As the difficulty increases, you’ll need to create effective combos to stay alive.
Gordian Quest has just started with Early Access and currently only has one act to play through – three more will follow. However, this solitary act lasts about five or six hours. There are six heroes with a total of around 500 active and passive skills to choose from. And as with the acts, other heroes are on the way.
Gordian Quest is now available for PC via Steam Early Access. You can check out the full list of Early Access features, as well as all of the content still to come, on the game’s Steam page.
