. . a>. .The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority (RITBA) announced this morning that the first sequence of the deck repair project on the Newport Pell Bridge is expected to be completed this week. This happens almost three weeks before the planned completion in mid-December. This work, which began in early August, consisted of a partial demolition of hydropower plants and the replacement of the concrete deck for 4,500 feet on the westward lane of the East Approach between spans 2E and 22E. The contractor removed the concrete deck down to the reinforcement and fresh concrete was poured. This work required permanent road closures and a unique traffic pattern to reduce traffic congestion.
During the winter months there will be no demolition or concrete work due to the temperatures. As a result, there are no permanent road closures on the bridge. In connection with other projects, however, ongoing maintenance work is carried out, which requires regular lanes to be closed outside of rush hour and on some nights. Overweight vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVW) in excess of 80,000 pounds are permitted to cross the bridge during this time with valid government approval. The second sequence of the water demolition project is scheduled to begin in March 2020.
Visit the RITBA website at RITBA.org to plan your commute and access up-to-date information on construction activity and real-time traffic. This website provides the latest information on road closures, construction work and traffic delays for the Newport Pell, Jamestown Verrazzano, Mount Hope and Sakonnet bridges in addition to RT. 138 connection.
