Why is a pool fence important?
The types of pool fences you have decided on may play an important – albeit often overlooked – role in the images you may consider for your great pool system. While options like landscaping, lighting, and various design gadgets are brought together to create the mood and experience you want, it is the pool fence that contains and protects it all. Because of this, many go to a painstaking effort to design a fence that deserves what is within its perimeter while remaining cheap (or not) with some level of privacy in the back yard.
What are the requirements and do they vary by state?
All swimming pools, spas and safety barriers (including barriers for above-ground pools and inflatable pools greater than 300mm deep) require a pool permit before any construction or installation can begin. Pool fence regulations vary from state to state and are constantly being updated to improve safety around the water (you need to check if your state accepts the shield as a fence). Victoria, NSW, South Australia, Tasmania, Western Australia and the ACT must all adhere to the current Australian standard AS1926-2012.
The Australian standard AS1926.1-1993 applies to pool owners in the Northern Territory. Queensland adheres to its own modified standard AS 1926-2007 along with the state standard QDC MP 3.4.
The basic criteria for fencing swimming pools are independent of the state:
• • Pool fences must have a minimum height of 1200 mm.
• • The top of the fence must be a minimum of 900mm away from any climbable objects such as trees, pergolas, barbecues, toys, potted plants and furniture.
• • Gaps in the fence must be less than 100 mm.
• • The pool fence must be made of durable materials.
• • The gates must close themselves and swing away from the pool.
• • Gate bolts must be installed at the pool.
When in doubt, your licensed pool fencing contractor or installer can verify all regulations in your state.
Do you need a permit?
On December 1, 2019, new laws to improve the safety of swimming pools and spas went into effect in Victoria. They introduced new registration, inspection and certification requirements for property owners.
If you own property that has a pool or spa, you must register your pool and spa with the local council.
You can contact your community or check their website for more information about registering your pool or spa, including the fees to be paid.
