The Texan legend Willie Nelson raves about driving the Cole Porter classic “Don’t Fence Me In” through wide open country.
When the red-haired stranger wanted a fence about 20 years ago, he turned to Richard Curtis – a longtime fence builder who owns the Pecos Fence Co. Inc. of San Antonio. The company won the Reader’s Choice Award as a professional contractor for the second year running.
Curtis passed the reins of the company to his daughter Jennifer Curtis, a retired math and science teacher, a few years ago. He’s still in the shop, showing her the ropes and telling “crazy stories” – including building the fence for Nelson, one of her mother’s favorite singers.

“He’s taking down Willie Nelson’s gate and later selling it. My mother almost killed him, ”Jennifer Curtis said with a laugh.
Richard Curtis started out in the fencing business in Las Vegas 53 years ago. He started Pecos in San Antonio in 2007.
It installed everything from backyard privacy fences to the 14,200 foot fences that surround USAA corporate headquarters, Jennifer Curtis said. “As far as we know, it’s still the longest commercial fence in San Antonio,” she added.
More recently, Pecos built 55,000 feet of fence for a huge solar array in Fort Stockton, west Texas. The white floral vinyl lace fence was also installed at Lady Bird Johnson Park in San Antonio, she said.
Jennifer Curtis recognized the company’s expertise for getting readers high marks.
“We are very humble,” she said of winning the Reader’s Choice Award. “We’re just very grateful to the people of San Antonio for hugging us.”
