Gary Wayne Floyd approached a four month old stray puppy in a driveway and shot him, according to an incident report. A witness told police the puppy did not attack anyone or was aggressive.
Floyd tried to shoot the puppy days earlier, but was stopped by people at the residence the puppy was in, according to the report.
He shot the puppy at around 3:45 p.m. Monday, picked it up and, according to the report, threw it into a water-filled ditch by the road. Police found blood and a single cartridge case on the floor at the scene. The puppy was taken out of the ditch and had a bullet hole in the right ear and neck.
The residents of the house agreed to bury the puppy, according to the report.
Floyd told police he shot the dog because his aunt told him to do so, according to the report. According to an arrest warrant, he lived on the same street where the puppy was killed.
Floyd has been charged with cruelty to animals. He stayed in jail from Wednesday morning.
