Palazzolo said he was 50 years old.

“You’re a bit young to do the whole lawn thing,” CBS News told Palazzolo, to which he laughed and replied, “I know, right?”

But he said something had to be done. Under cover of darkness he went into his driveway and wrote a message to the boy in which he basically said, “Child, you win.”

The next day this scene unfolded. “You can almost see the look on his face when he gets it and then he just storms in,” said Palazzolo.

That was in June, and from that day until today Palazzolo’s driveway racetrack has remained. Whenever the weather washes it away, he just draws another one. He even built a fixture to keep the lines straight and is now researching famous racetracks for track authenticity. This guy is really serious about his chalk on the sidewalk.

“Chances are you’ve got more to do with it now than he is,” CBS News told Palazzolo.

“It is quite possible,” he replied.

Let’s actually call it a tie.

The 4-year-old named Quinn discovers Palazzolo’s newest creation. Before the surveillance camera went off for the first time, Palazzolo had never met Quinn or his family. But all summer he helped raise the boy – in this little way.

“It was amazing,” said Quinn’s father Josh. “Just that we can be a part of something like this – that we can see the good side of humanity. It feels good.”

There are a lot of great dads out there. But the true measure of a man is not how he raises his own children – it is how he raises the village.
